Employers must appoint competent ‘health and safety assistance’ with sufficient training, experience and knowledge. British Medical Association:

The BMA has published a new report: Tackling Healthcare Associated Infections
Through Effective Policy Action.

This 2009 report examines the evidence base for the range of infection control
policies, and identifies areas for action in tackling the problem.It builds
on the 2006 BMA Board of Science publication Healthcare Associated Infections
– a Guide for Healthcare Professionals, which sets out the responsibilities
healthcare professionals have in managing and reducing the incidence of HCAIs.

The National Audit Office

A new report on healthcare associated infections: Reducing Healthcare Associated
Infections in Hospitals in England. It examines:



  • The extent and impact of healthcare associated infections

  • Effectiveness, sustainability and cost of the Department of Health’s
    approach

  • Effectiveness of action taken in hospitals to prevent and control infections

  • Barriers to improvement and recommends the steps that the NHS should take
    to sustain and make further progress.

LPDG comment

The reports give details of progress against targets (getting better) and also
puts forward further recommendation.

Some of the recommendations that may be applicable to your premises are the
possible need for further improvements/restrictions in antibiotic prescribing,
need for "protected time" for link nurses and the importance on regular
auditing to assure compliance (Staff & Doctors) with basic precautions -
this is still not wide spread in all premises. If you require additional support,
